Description

Members of the Midland Gliding Club first flew from the Long Mynd in 1934. It is not only one of the longest established gliding clubs in the UK but also one of Britain's prime gliding sites.

Our 334 acre airfield is 1,500 feet above sea level on top of the Long Mynd amidst the glorious scenery of the South Shropshire hills.  It is a wonderful place just to spend time and relax.  Add to that the sheer joy of soaring with the buzzards over Shropshire’s verdant landscape in a modern 2 seat glider – who could ask for more?

MGC is a club where everything is owned, operated and managed by the membership although we do have a small staff of professional instructors, engineers and administrators.  New members are always very welcome.

The clubhouse is perched on the edge of the west facing escarpment of the Long Mynd with wonderful views over the Welsh Marches. We have professional catering, a comfortable lounge and members’ bar.  On site accommodation ranges from en-suite double rooms to a bunkroom.  There is also a fenced area for tents and caravans.

The recommended way to get started is to enrol on a midweek ‘holiday’ course run by our professional instructors.  The atmosphere is relaxed, the location is idyllic and the standard of aircraft and instruction are of the highest order.

Follow this up with weekend visits and/or further courses until you are ready to fly solo.  The thrill of your first solo flight is something you never forget.

Trial membership.  The club is currently offering a 3 month trial membership package.  For £95 you will have 3 months full membership of the club and the use of all its facilities with the added bonus of your first lesson free.  We hope you will enjoy the experience sufficiently to continue as a permanent member.

Trial lessons   Trial lesson vouchers make ideal Birthday, Christmas or Valentine presents.  Contact the office for details.

Group visits   We welcome groups from all types of organisations.  These are usually arranged for summer evenings.

Pre-booking is normally essential for all trial flights but it is often possible to fit you in at short notice.

The Midland Gliding Club is a leading provider of pilot training appreciated by pilots from all over the UK. We also welcome regular visitors from Europe and further afield.

We operate 7 days per week from March to the end of October and then through the winter from Thursday to Sunday.  For more information and photographs visit www.longmynd.com
